Description

Breast cancer of Japanese women has gradually increased below the surface since World War II, and the annual number of death from breast cancer in 2002 reached to a little less than 10,000. Since the 10-year survival rate after treatment exceeds 80% due to good therapeutic performance of breast cancer, as a matter of course, the number of patients comes up to fifty thousands. The number of patients of breast cancer among Japanese women show a mountain-shaped distribution pattern with a peak at the age of 50, which is different from the distribution pattern of European and American women increasing with growing age. These facts becomes a menace to Japanese womanhood and has repeatedly been reported by the mass media especially in recent years. In view of the situation, whether breast cancer comes to be found earlier than before in Japan is "No"; there is no end of patients who we feel why they let breast cancer go for so long. The principal primary symptom of breast cancer is palpable "a lump" in the breast and they can perceive an unforeseen happening in the breast by awareness. It is accordingly important that they should recognize the increase of breast cancer and conscientiously carry out the breast self-palpation. The spread of mammography examination will be expected but the breast self-examination is more important task for the moment.
