Description
Polygonal representation is a widely-used technique for the object modelling in the CG. But, it has a 3D aliasing problem, and the modelling process of the 3D objects is very tedious and time-consuming. An interactive modelling method is proposed here which takes these features of the polygonal modeling into consideration. We use the FFD(free-form deformation) for the modelling tool. In the deforming process, when the size of the polygons are larger than the area of the deformation, the 3D aliasing occurs. For preventing this problem, the polygons must be subdivided into smaller polygons. However, when many small polygons are produced, the real-time processing becomes difficult. It is important to remove the unnecessary vertices for keeping the polygonal model simple. In this paper, an algorithm for the real-time subdivision and the merging of polygons is constructed, and its usefulness is confirmed by implementing this algorithm.
