Description
ABT (ATM Block Transfer) is expected for effectively transferring a highly bursty data traffic in ATM networks. In the past work, ABT/IT has been shown to be robust in the sense that its performance is not much affected by the propagation delay when compared with ABT/DT. When the traffic load becomes heavy, however, the throughput of even ABT/IT is dramatically decreased. In the original ABT protocols, only the reservation on the bandwidth is considered, but the reservation scheme on the buffer within the ATM switch is also important for further performance improvement. In this paper, we introduce the ABT protocol which incorporates the buffer reservation as well as the bandwidth reservation. We first describe the algorithm, followed by its approximate analysis method. Through numerical examples, we show that the new scheme is more effective than the exiting ABT protocol.
