Description

A tensile structure, which is stabilized by prestressing, is usually deformable, especially when it is subject to an asymmetrical loading. It is known that the deformation as well as the stiffness of a tensile structure is sensitive to its erection (initial) shape. Based on such a feature, the author presents a shape optimization method to find the optimum shape of a tensile structure with maximum overall stiffness. In the optimization performed by the author, an objective function to evaluate the overall stiffness is required, and it should be studied before the demonstration of the optimization. Therefore, the present paper reports a study on the stiffness evaluation functions for the optimization. In this study, General Reduced Gradient method and linear structural analysis are adopted for the shape optimization. A cable dome is taken as an example for the numerical demonstration of the present theory, and the results show that the nodal displacements decreases 20%-30% compared to that of the initial shape.
