Abstract The establishment of a reliable model for the grinding process is a key issue in predicting process performance. In this study a method, based on the optical profilometry, to represent grinding wheel surface characteristics is proposed. Considering the wheel topography information, a computer simulation of the grinding process is performed to predict the ground surface roughness and the grinding force. A characteristic feature of the simulation method is that the chip removal process of each individual cutting edge is simulated based on the relative motion between the grinding wheel and the workpiece.
