Description
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors. They are considered to originate from interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) that are the pacemaker of gastrointestinal movement because both GISTs and ICCs express c-kit gene product (KIT) and CD34. Gain-of-function mutations of c-kit gene are major cause of tumorigenesis of GISTs, and the constitutively activated KIT by the mutations is a molecular target of selective tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
