Description
NAGAI Kafu (永井荷風 1879-1959) kept writing his diary from 1917 to 1959, which was entitled as Dan Chiyo Tei Nichi Jyo (断腸亭日乗). This article mainly intended to analyse its descriptions concerning Japanese colonial rule over Korea. There are many versions of this diary text available today. This article first examined these texts and came to the conclusion that the second edition of the Complete Works of NAGAI Kafu published by Iwanami Shoten (岩波書店), Publishers should be the basic text for the analysis. Adopting this version as a main text, the author proceeded to analyse its descriptions concerning Japanese colonial rule over Korea extensively. As a result, this article found that in the diary NAGAI Kafu wrote about the significant contemporary social and historical phenomena. He also expressed his understanding and his reaction in this diary.
