説明

The total area of glaciers at Mt.Rainier,Washington,U.S.A. was measured by a simplified areal measurement method using both digital image processing and a large-scale map, whereby adequate value was obtained. By adopting this value as a criterion, the areal representation of all glaciers at Mt.Rainier drawn on small-scale maps was examined. As a result, it was comfirmed that the two small-scale maps(i.e.,the l:250,000-scale topographic map published by the U.S.Geological Survey and the l:500,000-scale tactical pilotage chart published by the Defence Mapping Agency Aerospace Center) are accurate enough for practical Usage. This fact suggests that these two maps are of increasing use and value in areal measurement.
