Description

A typical biconical antenna commonly used in EMI measurements is investigated on its radiation pattern and height dependence of antenna factor. And, EMI measurement results obtained with a biconical antenna are numerically compared with those obtained with a tuned dipole antenna. These studies reveal that the antenna factor of a biconical antenna hardly varies with the antenna height especially below 50 MHz, but it varies more greatly at around 300 MHz in comparison with that of a tuned dipole. In addition, a biconical antenna yields much smaller values in EMI measurements, compared with a tune dipole, at frequencies below 50 MHz, especially when the antenna factor calibrated at 2 m is used. Finally, it is recommended the free-space antenna factor should apply to a biconical antenna to get much better agreement in EMI measurements with those obtained with a tuned dipole.
