We have developed an efficient continuous scan image system with line sensor cameras capable of taking high precision panoramic annular images of the track which enable us to inspect or diagnose rail defects or track materials damage. We have developed the correction technique which normalizes the precise longitudinal distance according to the detected beacon of known kirometerage. We have developed image segmentation method which automatically defines such as crossing, switch, or beacon as foreground first, then defines the rest of region, such as ballast or sleeper as background. According to proposed segmentation, it is possible to specify precisely a workable area and a restricted area, that is, a proper operation instruction which indicates the track area is workable or not, for maintenance car such as tamping machine is provided preliminarily.
