Abstract

DNA-anti-DNA immune complexes (ICs) were measured in an antigen specific manner with fluorophotometry using 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid dihydrochloride (DABA), a substance for measuring minute quantities of DNA. Of 43 systemic lupus erythematosus patients, 18 had high levels of DNA-anti-DNA ICs. Of these, four were not administered an increased dosage of prednisolone and were found to develop proteinuria. However, nine of the patients who received prednisolone or were treated with its increased doses showed a rapid decline in the level of DNA-anti-DNA ICs and did not develop proteinuria, and in two patients, proteinuria improved. This study has demonstrated that DNA-anti-DNA ICs are present in the serum and play an important role in the development of lupus nephritis.
