Description
As a first step to introducing therapeutic touch trends in Japan, we have attempted to provide a definition of therapeutic touch, together with some pertinent suggestions. Characteristics of therapeutic touch include : 1) therapeutic touch has its roots in the laying-on of hands ; 2) it is a healing process employing energy transfer from one person to another ; 3) the hands do not necessarily touch the body ; 4) it is conducted with the purpose of healing an ill or injured person; and 5) the healer is required to center himself or herself. We have discussed the following points: I ) whether therapeutic touch should be regarded as a derivative of laying-on of hands or be explained solely in terms of Rogers ' nursing theory ; 2) whether it is possible to obtain similar effects mentally or verbally instead of touching; 3) whether therapeutic touch can be performed more effectively if the healer is not overly concerned with the purpose of helping patients.
