説明

Our approach to the problem of hysteria is mainly from the standpoint of differentiating conversion hysteria from psychosomatic disorders. Freud looked at hysteria on the basis of his unique theory, especially castration complex and symbolization. Though his original pattern of repression-regression-conversion is still preserved, today socio-cultural views are being added to it, which include basic needs and frustration, somatization of repressed emotional energy. So the term conversion hysteria is now used quite extensively. Moreover, recently as we meet more hysterics who develop somatic symptoms in the organs that are under the control of the autonomic nervous system, we are reminded to be more careful about the use of the term. Some suggest, in this regard, that it is best not to use this term at all. However, we held an opinion that the term can be used if it is elearly defined. At our clinic, the term hysteria is used particularly when some functional change is recognized in a part or organ which is under the control of will, and also when the symptom indicates substitute satisfaction or symbolic meaning, as well as when there is a clear implication of any gain or escape in relation to the illness.
