Description

We developed and tested two new trial connections for large dimension glued laminated timber. The concept of development was reformation and application of Japanese traditional connecting system. The first connecting system ("A") was tongue and groove joint ("Honzane Tsugi") with tension and compression board jointed by dowels. The two tested types differed in number of dowels. The other system ("B") was dadoed and rabbetted scarf joint ("Okkake-daisen Tsugi"). For this system, the reinforced type with nails was also tested. Static bending tests were conducted on all beams. The joint efficiency of A system varied from 13.8% to 36.7%. For B system, the efficiencies were 22.1% and 23.6%, and the efficiencies increased by reinforcement (30.7% and 32.6%). We confirmed that the new systems would be practical as the ones developed up to now.
