説明

A 45°flat bladed counter rotating double swirler was compared with a single 45°flat bladed swirler at simulated gas turbine primary zone conditions. Premixed results for the double swirler were compared with twelve point annular propane axial injection between the two opposed direction swirlers. This gave direct propane injection into the annular counter rotating shear layer. Internal radial traverses were used to show that the fuel and air mixing was superior with the double swirler compared with the single swirler with axial fuel injection, in spite of a lower pressure loss of the double swirler. However, the mixing was not sufficiently good to eliminate the rich central core region of the single swirler and was close to stoichiometric, resulting in relatively high NO_x and combustion inefficiency. The counter rotating double swirler had a superior combustion efficiency and lower NO_x for equivalence ratios less than 0.4, compared with the single swirler. However, these improvements were not large and were accompanied by a deterioration in the weak extinction characteristics. Thus, in spite of the apparent advantages of double swirlers they did not exhibit any substantial improvement in combustion performance compared with a single swirler, for lean primary zone operation.
