Description

To clarify the microscopic postmortem changes of the interlobular bile duct (IBD), macroscopically normal-appearing livers were examined in fifty five medico legal autopsy cases (age 0〜75) after sudden death. The microscopic postmortem changes of IBD included cell surface changes, increase of degenerative substances in lumina, nuclear pyknosis and cytoplasmic eosinophilia, dissection of cell junctional portions, basement membranous changes, liquefactive and desquamative changes, decrease of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining reactivity in cell surface and degenerative substances, and swelling of nuclei. The severity of almost all of these changes was dependent upon TAD, contrary to this, the changes swelling of the nuclei increased in the first stage of TAD and then it started to decrease rapidly. It appears that the occurrent index of the microscopic postmortem changes in IBD by original criteria could be utilized as a measure of TAD.
