説明

Metrical analysis was made on the shape of the earlobe at its insertion to the facial skin in a random Japanese population, 264 males and 261 females, 4 to 89 years of age. A new measure representing the pendulousness of the earlobe was designated as "the pendulous length". The mean values of this length was larger in childhood, but decreased rapidly until adolescense, followed by a constant tendency during adulthood. This result coincided with the fact that the incidence of the free-type was more frequent in children's earlobe and was replaced by the more frequent attached-type with advancing age. The mean values of the pendulous length were significantly larger in males than in females on the assembled data of adults, 25 to 69 years of age. Correlation of the pendulous length to 11 other items on the same adult individuals was not significant in both sexes, excepting that to age in years for males.
