Abstract
University of Library and Information Science (ULIS) is one of the earlier sites of JUNET. At ULIS, mail has been exchanged for 14 years internally and 11 years externally, and NetNews has been used for over 9 years. Recently, use of the mail and news became more widespread within the school. Their role in promoting discussion among students, teachers, computer center and library staff, and former students are discussed, by using some examples of actual discussion in the local newsgroup. Change in the promptness, openness and disregard to age difference in discussion is noted. Preliminary discussion a newsgroup were found to influence some ordinary business meetings.
