Description

Multi-level Trellis-Coded Modulation (TCM) schemes have been studied for use with digital radio communication systems. Among these TCM schemes, we have already reported the optimum signal constellation of a rate-3/4 Trellis-Coded (TC) 16-level Amplitude-Phase-Shift-Keying (APSK) modulation scheme. In this paper, we investigate the various signal allocations (32-Circular, 32(16, 11, 5)-Circular, 32(24, 8)-Circular, 32-Cross, 32-Square, 32-Hexagonal, 32-Triangular) of a rate-4/5 32-level APSK scheme, and evaluate the free distance(minimum Euclidean distance) and the bit error probability under the same peak power condition. It is found that the 32(24, 8)-Circular type which shows the largest value of free distance is the optimum signal constellation.
