Description

The two candidates promising for short-term earthquake prediction are (1) ULF seismogeric emissions (just coming from the focal region) and (2) subionospheric VLF/LF propagation, This results deals with the precursory results for a large earthquake at Biak Island, Indonesia (Ms-8.0, depth-20km) on February 17th, 1996. First of all, there was fortunately a magnetic observatory (belonging to Nagoya University), where they measure the three field components (Bx, By, Bz) with sampling rate of 1sec. The result suggests a precursory ULF signature. Also, the data (phese) of subionospheric VLF signals transmitted from Omega (Australia) and received at Inubo, have yielded that there were observed significant anomalies, which are evident to be associated with the earthquake. The analyses for different observation items for a perticular earthquake is extremely rare.
