The incremental perturbation method enables a numerical dynamic analysis of structure to provide automatically a proper time length at every incremental step. In this paper, an effective strategy for truncation error control is proposed in order to compute an appropriate value of the time length. The strategy estimates relative truncation errors both in odd power terms and in even power terms of perturbation expansion series. When the perturbation order is four, this strategy is demonstrated to be efficient and accurate in a free vibration response of a linear single-degree-of-freedom system. Also, the differential equations of van der Pol are numerically estimated by the incremental perturbation method with the proposed strategy.
