Description
A 51 years old female had small vesicles and pain in a right buttock five days before. She took varasiclovir hydrochloride (3000 mg/day) orally for 3 days from a physician.Urination symptom progressed to urinary retention, and defecation appeared. The patient came to our hospital and was admitted for the treatment. Based on the clinical symptoms and a positive result of varicella-zoster virus testing with FITC-labeled anti-VZV antibody, the patient was diagnosed to be herpes zoster associated with bladder/rectum symptom. After admission, vidarabine (300 mg/day) was infused for 5 days. For the urinary retention, self catheterization was performed. For the defecation disorder, a cathartic agent was administered. The urination symptom improved from 3 days after starting the infusion and disappeared in three more days without leaving any sequelae. We should pay attention on bladder/rectum symptom in cases of herpes zoster in the sacral region of spinal cord.
