Study on the Reactions and the Mechanical Properties of Maleimide/Cyanate Resin System

Description

Using bis (3, 5-dimethy 1-4-cyanatophenyl) methane (MC) as a cyanate compound and 2-bis [4- (4-maleimidephenoxy) phenyl] propane (MI) as a maleimide compound, the detailed investigation on the curing reaction and the mechanical properties of the MI/MC resin system was carried out.<BR>Reactivities of each cyanate and maleimide group were almost the same. The cyanate group produced a triazine ring by trimerization and maleimide group polymerized by itself. Any addition reaction between the cyanate group and the maleimide group couldn't be detected by IR and 13C NMR methods.<BR>The MI/MC system was homogeneous and supposed to produce an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) structure, because only one tan δ peak was detected in the dynamic mechanical analysis. Various mechanical properties were measured and discussed.
