Description
Dr. Ilizarov established the concept of distraction osteogenesis while he was applying his technique by using an external skeletal fixator with a ring and thin wire to different diseases. This technique makes all sorts of tissue such as nerves, blood vessels and skins as well as bones longer by lengthening 1mm per day. The medical treatment for the difference in length between both lower limbs, various deformities of limbs, extensive bone defect and shortening of limbs, which there was nothing but shortening of a bone to cope with, became possible by this technique. The Ilizarov technique is able to apply to three-dimensioned deformities because of the use a ring and besides it exceeds other external skeletal fixators in fixing. This technique, however, has disadvantages: the structure of the device is complicated; there is a risk of neurovascular damage due to the use of wire; the device is bulky. There is another risk of infection due to the fact that a pin is installed going out of the body, which would be the fate of external skeletal fixation. In this study, we examined the application of the external skeletal fixation, the concept of the correction of deformities and the complications.
