Description

The demand for single-chip MPEG2 video encoder for consumer applications, has spurred many efforts in the development of such LSI's. We developed a sible-chip MOEG2 MP@ML video encoder for consumer applications with a 128-GOPS motion estimator and a multi-tasking RISC controller. It consists of 5.5 milion transistors and measures 100-mm2 in a 0.25-um CMOS technology. Real-time encoding can be performed at 81 Mhz with a power consumption of 0.95W at 1.8V. In order to achieve picture quality higher than that of MPEG2 test model(TM), we developed a motion estimator which had a selectable search area size and pel-precision.
