Abstract

This paper compared the discontinuous constructions "dimgaai A ge2" in Cantonese and "nandao A ma" in Chinese Mandarin on which of the preposition and the postposition the core part of the construction is. As a result, based on the investigation of the most typical discontinuous constructions "dimgaai A ge2" in Cantonese and "nandao A ma" in Chinese Mandarin, the following tendency is revealed. The postposition, as the core part of discontinuous constructions in Cantonese, plays a more important grammatical role in the construction. In contrast, discontinuous constructions in Chinese Mandarin have no clear inclination on which of the preposition and the postposition the core part of the construction is.
