Description

It is well known that Latin comparatives cannot be used in comparative constructions with than as shown in A is inferior/junior/senior/superior than/to B. However, there are some 'Latin comparatives+than' constructions found in the CNN transcripts corpus. It is argued that the above constructions with the intensifiers like far and much can be occurred only when Latin comparatives are construed as non-Latin counterparts (e.g. worse, younger, older, better) and that the ones with more or less can be occurred when the speaker intends to convey the core meanings of Latin comparatives (e.g. BAD, YOUNG, OLD, GOOD).
