Description

To investigate the pattems of females' physical constitution, the authors analyzed questionnaire data of 90 Japanese, age 20-60 years. The factor analysis of 35 items concerning physical traits reveales that six factors are present as follows: insomnia, maldigestive, retentive, cold-seeking, slim, and glycophile. The insomnia factor correlates to dysthymic personality and general physical frailty. The retentive factor is negatively related to inclination to such adult diseases as diabetes and hypertention. The glycophile factor associates with asthenic-dependent personality. The cluster analysis (Ward method) yields six clusters. Although 80% of the females shows fairly normal constitution patterns, 18 participants are assigned 3 problematic types named GI-weakness (n=9), asthenic-nervous (n=3), and ectodermal-handicapped (n=6). These findings are partially consonant with the view of Asian traditional medicine, i.e. Chinese (Kanpo) or Indian (Ayurveda) medical system.
