Abstract
As preparation for colonoscopy, we administered intestinal lavage using polyethylene glycol electrolyte lavage solution (PEG-ELS) in 72 patients. The standard lavage procedure developed orginally by Davis was carried out in 58 patients, averaging 2,350ml per dose. In the other 14 patients a low dose of PEG-ELS (1,500ml) was used. Good cleansing of all parts of the colon resulted from either method. No notable changes were observed in the hematocrit, serum electrolytes or blood pressure during administration of the new solution. Results of the present study demonstrated that PEG-ELS is effective, easy to tolerate, and safe for use in intestinal lavage preceding colonoscopy. Furthermore, the low dose lavage procedure was deemed more useful than the conventional formula because with an approximately 36% smaller dose comparable results were achieved.
