Description
In the Tokaido-Shinkansen, the wear detection system for contact wire is used. This system detects wear by small electric current through detecting cables within contact wire. But it is available only in midnight when power supply to contact wire is cut off and no inductive noises are made. Therefore we are developing a new wear detection system which is available all the time, even when trains are operated. The new system uses optical time-domain reflectometry to detect in which location the wear of contact wire reaches its limit, by passing pulsed light through fibers within contact wire. Up to now, we developed a new type of contact wire with two optical fibers in it and a prototype of the wear detector and confirm basic performance of the system.
