Description
The impact of a long-term /r/-/l/ identification training was studied with 4 Japanese subjects using 200 tokens produced by 10 American talkers for the target consonants in initial and consonant cluster positions.Another 200 tokens produced by 10 different talkers were used in 15 training sessions, and each subject's sensitivity to non-training tokens greatly increased after training.Even then, each subjects had some tokens that they could not identify properly, and in an extreme case, some /l/ tokens were always erroneously identified as /r/, indicating that Japanese identify these consonants in a way that is fundamentally different from native English speakers.
