Description

This report introduces a new viewpoint to interpret the principle of adaptive algorithms. According to this view point discovered from the first order IIR (infinite impulse response) filter expression of the NLMS (normalized least mean square) algorithm, the principle results in the set of three functions which are conversion to direct current, normalization by power and suppression of unnecessary alternating current components with a low pass filter, respectively. This interpretation of the principle shows that the convergence rate is enhanced by using the estimated coefficients of the adaptive filter and removing the old estimation error from the estimation process. This report finally presents three methods to remove the old estimation error and shows that these methods result in the NLMS, individually normalized LMS and the sub-RLS (recursive least squares) algorithms.
