Description
Byzantine-style is less noticed in Japan because of its religious characteristics and complexities. It is my belief, though, that to study and recognize Byzantine arts is the most important for better understanding Europian history of art which has been always good contrast to the Oriental. In terms of visual art, one of the most interesting things during Byzantine era is the reason how organized Byzantine stiles and its long-live evidence, byzantine mosaics. In this note the brief history of byzantine mosaics and how they are developed in Italy are introduced with pictures. The auther visited Aquileia, Venice, Ravena, Rome, Palermo to research notable churches covered with the art of Byzantine mosaics. It is concluded that the mosaic is an inevitable method for representing christianity principle as the decorative art.
