General Education courses were first introduced in 1949,when new-system colleges and universities were started. They were institutionalized in 1956. They were produced to make up for an old-system university defect : old-system universities tended to produce graduates with knowledge of only their specialization. It was a good and great ideal to let students have knowledge in various fields, but the reality was far from it. The general education courses have never been fully examined and discussed in colleges and universities. Probably that is why they have scarcely been popular with students. It is pointed out that general education is considerably responsible for the "May disease" of Japanese university freshmen, or rookies' nervous breakdown. Since 1956 Japanese economy has remarkably developed, society has changed and students' character has changed, too. It is difficult to suppose that the educational laws and institutions made in 1956 can be applied today. Right after the campus dispute the general education courses were examined. As a result, several integrated courses appeared in Kwansei Gakuin University and other universities. Seminars in human and social sciences were created. But it is more than fifteen years since they were set up. It is high time they were reexamined Article 22 of Kwansei Gakuin University Regulations divide general education courses into four : Category I (Human Sciences), Category II (Social Science), Category III (Natural Science) and Category IV (Christian Studies). Usually, foreign language courses and health and physical education are included in them. The reseach has been done by all the members of the team, but the paper was written by Keisuke Suzuki. The paper contains the following chapters. Chapter I Some Problems of General Education as Whole Chapter II Examination of Lectures in General Education Chapter III : Examination of Foreign Language Education Chapter IV Examination of Seminars in General Education
