説明
This paper describes fifteen cases of psychosomatic diseases in whom the Maudsley Personality Inventory (M. P. I.) was used to access the effectiveness of a minor tranquilizer (Diazepam).SGS-DE (Standardized General Survey of Drug Effects) for the clinical signs and symptoms of the patients was adapted to decide the drug effects in every week.Three milligrams of diazepam were administered three times in a day (nine milligrams in total…thought as maximum doses in medical treatment) for four weeks. The M.P.I. was performed before and again during diazepam administration (about four weeks after the beginning of our research). This test has only eighty articles and the patients can complete is easily in short time in the waiting room. The M.P.I. is composed of three main scales including the E scale indicating as the grade of intra-extraversion, the N scale as of neuroticism and the L scale as of lie telling tendency.Clinically the L scale is considered as the degree of self-ostentation of the patients and of co-operation in doctor-patient relatinoship.(This test has otherwise twelve articles of the neutral division, but they are not discussed in this paper.)Four patients showed a marked clinical improvement, six patients, moderate and five indicated no improvement. In these four patients with marked improvement, the E scale of the M.P.I. showed a slight increase compared to the predrug score. (In other groups, the E scale did not indicate any remarkable change.)The N scale of the patients with marked clinical improvement, however, showed a marked decrease in the post-drug score while random changes were prescribed on patients with moderate or no definite improvement. As to the L scale, every case showed random changes with no definite rules. These findings suggest the M.P.I. can be useful in evaluating the effectiveness of minor tranquilizers in psychosomatic diseases.Further statistical correlation is to be indicated.
