Description
This paper focuses on interrogative sentences in Japanese in which the speaker tells the hearer his wish for the latter to do something for him. We assume the speaker does his best to make sure his wish be fulfilled and that this effort on the part of the speaker has some grammatical consequences on the sentence he employs. First, we discuss the two basic conditions the interrogative type in question needs to meet as an appropriate action-requesting sentence : (1) it must express the content of the speaker's wish clearly : (2) it must rely on the politeness strategy. Then, we consider four verbal auxiliaries and how they contribute to meeting the two conditions.
