Through the repeated economic shocks, the growth rate of the Japanese economy has declined. Those shocks have also largely changed the industrial structure. In this situation, the number of stores in the retail business, which was characterized by small sizes and superabundant numbers, increased after the World War II. But it was reported by the Census of Commerce that the number of stores decreased for the first time from 1982 (S. 57) to 1985 (S. 60). Was it a temporary phenomenon or a structural and permanent one? If it was a permanent one, what is its characteristics? What kinds of measures were taken by ratail stores to meet this situation? Thus, we sent out a questionnaire in January, 1989. In this paper, we will discuss the structural change of the retail business based on several commercial statistics and analyze the conclusion which was obtained from the questionnaire.
