Description

The TOEIC summer intensive course has been producing great results every year at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, since its introduction in 2003. The improvements have been measured by the pre- and post-course IP (Institutional Program) tests. However, the course has always suffered from differences in the students' English abilities. Students with high proficiency seemed to be held back, whereas weaker students could not express their questions in class because they were embarrassed and did not want to take any lesson time away from the students who already knew the answers. This article introduces the efforts to help students focus on the tasks most necessary to become effective TOEIC test takers by dividing classes according to their levels. The effects of dividing the classes and the test results are provided in this paper. The feedback from the students and the results of the questionnaires are also discussed.
