Abstract

The difference between the two Japanese legal terms of "contents" (kontentsu) and "copyrighted materials" (chosakubutsu) should be distinguished. In this article, by following the legislation process of the "Act on Promotion of Creation, Protection and Exploitation of Contents", the formation of the legal "Contents" concept is clarified. The concept was originated in IT field and the meaning has changed, but it has worked as a political motivation. Since its definition is policy-oriented, it is hard to coin a unified academic discipline, but the provision of an integrated field can be expected to have the effect of providing a cross-cutting opportunity, as cultural expression itself did.
