In recent years, nano-sized hydroxyapatite (HA), which has a grain size less than 100 nm in at least one direction, has been of interest, owing to its excellent biocompatibility, affinity to biopolymers, and high osteogenic potential. In this study, the nano-sized and bone-like HA were successfully prepared from eggshells as a calcium source with adding mulberry leaf through precipitation method at room temperature for various times. These synthesized nanoparticles have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Notably, HA synthesized from eggshell powders contains several important trace elements, including Mg and Sr, which is beneficial to the overall biological performance as biomaterials. The morphology, size and composition of obtained HA product is similar to those of natural bone, and consequently the HA product can be a potential material for dental applications.
