Description

In a zoo, an "animal husbandry management system" is used for keeping records of animal individuals and incidents in husbandry activities. Veterinaries and keepers record incidents and medical treatment in this system every day. These recorded informations are used on breeding and treatment of animals. In this paper, we describe the zoo animal husbandry management system we developed and are operating in the Kyoto City Zoo. This system can store and display measurement data of sensors installed in a zoo, in addition to incident and medical records. Measurement data are gathered to the system through the wireless mesh network, which covers almost the whole area of Kyoto City Zoo. Based on this system, we also discuss about directions and problems for utilization of information and communication technologies in a zoo.
