Description

This experiment of the placebo response was designed to investigate the differential effects of subject's anxiety levels, the informations given at the capsules administration and the experimenter's attitude on subject's subjective feeling, psychomotor performance and heart rate change.Forty-three healthy-volunteers, twenty-two male and twenty-one female of college students, were divided into four groups randomly. Two capsules of placebo were administered under the informations either as a stimulant drug or as a depressant drug. As the experimenter's attitude to show his expectancy, P and M leadership patterns in PM leadership theory were used. The mirror drawing test was tried one time before and three times after the capsules administration. At the same time, subjective feeling and heart rate were measured. The main results were as follows : (1) Subjective placebo reactors were high anxiety score in MAS, low extraversion score and high neuroticism score in MPI as compared with nonreactors. These differences were statistically significant.(2) Stimulant placebo reactors were significantly high extraversion score in MPI as compared with depressant placebo reactors.(3) At the first day high incidence of placebo reactors were found in the high anxiety group, but no reactors in the low anxiety group. At the second day there was no difference in incidence of placebo reactors between these two groups.(4) Subjecitve feeling, psychomotor performance and heart rate change were not influenced by only the informations given at the capsule administration or the experimenter's attitude. But these were influenced by interaction of the informations and the experimenter's attitude.
