Description

The isozymic patterns of 5'-nucleotide phosphodiesterase (5'-NPD) in various diseases were examined compaing with normal subjects. 5'-NPD isozymes were named from the cathode side, as isozymes I to V. More than 80% of the total isozyme fractions were usually present in bands III and IV in normal subjects. The area of band IV was larger than that of band III ; both were found to have well-defined sharp shapes. The heights of band III and IV were lower in patients with liver cirrhosis than in normal subjects. In such patients, the height of band IV was lower than that of band III, and some tailing of band III toward the cathode was noted. The Railing rates in various diseases were as follows : in liver cirrhosis, 21.9±7.3%, in normal subjects, 11.0±2.6%, and in chronic hepatitis, 14.3±4.5%. These values indicate a significant degree of Railing for liver cirrhosis. No correlation between tailing rate and the levels of serum γ-globulin as well as cholinesterase could be found, and the rate of tailing was not time-dependent. Thus, the isozymic pattern of 5'-NPD may provide for the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis.
