To the questionnaire about the definition of hysteria sent out by us to 65 leading psychiatrists in Japan in May 1965, answers from 42 persons (64.4%) were obtained. They were summarized as follows : 1) Threes person among 42 disapproved of using the term of hysteria in practical diagnosis. 2) Eight person among 38 who used the term in their practice expressed that they were unwilling to do so ; 31 of the rest asserted that it should be used positively. 3) The most essential in diagnosing hysteria was judged to be symptomatic in 12, psychodynamic in 8, symptomatic plus psycho-dynamic in 7 and so on. 4) The most important of diagnostic informations were as follows : functional disorder (32), flight into disease (31), gain by disease (27), hyterical character (18), exaggeration of complaints (18), etc. 5) Not a few gave the impression that recently cases with conversion symptoms in the sensory motor system had decrease and that cases with vegetative disorders had increased. Concerning the diagnostic criteria of hysteria, the author's opinion was given.
