Description

This paper discusses the information capacity of the tree-structured schema that defines the layout and structure of reports or Web-pages generated from a relational database. When the information capacity of the output schema is smaller than the original database contents, there will be loss of information at the presentation. The information loss is not necessarily a bad thing if it is intensionally done to summarize the data. On the other way, when the information capacity of the output schema is larger, the information is over-presented in the output. We show all the publication made of a particular set of attributes constitute a lattice of information capacity, based on the partial order defined as the immediate derivation of the schema.
