Description

Hospitalized neurotic children with "school refusal" were observed and the data were analyzed from the viewpoint of their personal relationships and the effects of their interrelationships. 1) During the treatment process, the children exhibited three modes characterized by changes in their personal recognition of others, as follows: weakening of ego identity, fearing of I-and-you relationships and keeping of I-and-it relationships. 2) Each mode that the hospitalized children exhibited in their groups during the treatment has two submodes: active one, i.e. playing an active role, and passive one, i.e. staying in a passive role. 3) During their hospitalization, the children's personal recognition was changed by the effects of their interrelationships, and passed from one mode to another. Five patterns were found in these changes. 4) After they were discharged from the hospital, children who experienced a particular mode showed better social adjustment, because they could learn self-awareness through face-to-face relationships such as among their peer groups. 5) It is very important for health workers to make improvements in the treatment program helping children with "school refusal" learn meaningful face-to-face relationships. I believe this may be called as one of the socio-psychological therapies.
