Description

The kinematic axis is known to be valid for all sagittal jaw movements, any condylar point on it nearly reciprocating on a single surface. Thus, this axis can simplify the geometrical aspects of temporomandibular-joint movements. In order to locate this axis point on a.sagittal plane kinematically, cyclic jaw movements, such as those along the sagittal border, have been;employed. Accomplishing his sort of movement, however,is relatively difficult. Consequently, the location accuracy deteriorates. To improve this,we provide here a new technique applicable to both cyclic and non- cyclic data. The axis point can be obtained as a condylar point, whose motion range is the narrowest among all points, utilizing an appropriate search algorithm. This motion range, which is conventionally approximated as that surrounded by a closed trajectory,is here defined as the region lying between the superior and inferior trajectories, thus discarding of any cyclic data being achieved. The axis point minimizing the area of this region was verified to be valid, through experiments employing actual jaw-movement data.
