Just forty years have passed since the toll road system was introduced into Japan, and major toll roads have exceeded 7.000 kilometers in length, forming nation- wide highway network. Toll collection works depend, however, mostly on human resourceseven now, and efforts have been made to replace it with automatic system called ETC, electronic toll collection system. The Ministry of Construction and four major road authorities began in June 1995 joint R&D project with 10 consortia, ending in March 1996. The report was Publicized this August. System specifications will be prepared, and trial operation will begin eventually. This paper briefly describes technologies of ETC, development history, system requirements and schedule from the authority side.
