Description
The incidence of cancer in Japan included>700,000 cases in 2007. While the age-adjusted, all-cancer incidence rate has been increasing since 2000, the rate sharply increased among persons aged 75 years and older. The age-adjusted all-cancer mortality rate has been gradually decreasing since the late 1990's, particularly in persons under 75 years of age. With these increasing cancer incidence rates, improvements in cancer diagnosis and therapies have led to an improved 5-year survival, prolonged survivors, and increasing survival after treatment. This improved longterm survival may contribute to the observed increase in the incidence of cancer and second or third primaries. The course of cancer, including recurrence, metastasis, and multiple primary cancers is leading to increased costs and a requirement for medical insurance.
