Description
In recent years, a concept has been proposed that microsatellites be equipped with a mass driver, which exerts kinetic energy on a solid object accelerate and eject it into space using such means of acceleration as compressed gases, explosives, and electromagnetic force. Mass drivers will enable more missions and allow the realization a number of conceptualized ideas including the creation of artificial shooting star generators and the attitude control of troubled satellites in space debris measurement. This report focuses on a mass driver that is powered by compressed gas and designed to be mounted on a microsatellite; the basic performances and characteristics are evaluated with an on-ground experimental prototype model. Experiments and evaluations cover the following: ejection capability, including variations in ejection speed; effect of the tubing length, which ensures the flexibility of satellite design; and durability in vibration during the launch. Results of the various experiments confirm that the prototype model has a sufficient level of acceleration performance and vibration durability for use in spacecraft.
